Agni V | ICBM | Missile launched on 19th April 2012

Intercontinental Ballistic missile of India, named Agni V has been successfully test fired today from the Odisha coast.  According to media reports, the test firing of Agni V took place at 8.05 on 19th April 2012.  Originally, it was planned to be launched on Tuesday and was postponed to Thursday due to bad weather.

The missile has been test fired from a mobile launcher from the launch complex 4 of the Integrated Test Range, according to defence officials.

The test fired missile belongs to the category of Inter Continental Ballistic Missile.  As of today, United States, Russia, France and China possess such ICBM.

With a "launch mass" of around 50 tonne and a development cost of over Rs 2,500 crore, Agni-V will incorporate advanced technologies involving ring laser gyroscope and accelerometer for navigation and guidance. It takes its first stage from Agni-III, with a modified second stage and a miniaturized third stage to ensure it can fly to distances of 5,000 km.

Prime Minister of India Mr Manmohan Singh and Defence Minister Mr A.K.Antony congratulated the officials who were responsible for the launch of this super missile.
